Introduction

When you’ve got a busy household your flooring has be more than just stylish.  Imagine the scene; dogs charging through the back door, kids racing into the kitchen, or a steady stream of muddy boots and dinner guests; your flooring needs to hold its own!

At Floor Coverings, we are dedicated in helping our clients, in and around Cambridgeshire, find flooring that works just as hard as they do. The good news? You don’t have to sacrifice good looks for practicality. There are plenty of beautiful options that can handle life’s everyday chaos and still look fantastic for years to come.

Hard Flooring Options

Take engineered wood, for instance, it’s a go to for many of our clients who want the warmth and charm of real timber but need something a little more resilient. A lot of this is due to the way it’s made, with a solid top layer and a stable core beneath. Engineered wood is much more forgiving than traditional solid timber, especially in homes where doors are left open, the heating’s on and off and the dog doesn’t exactly tread lightly. Our trusted suppliers like, Ted Todd and Panaget create ranges that are both beautiful and robust and many come with finishes designed to resist scratching and scuffing making it an ideal choice for paws, claws and dropped toys.

If your home is particularly subject to high traffic (think kitchen-diner at the heart of family life), luxury vinyl tile, often known as LVT, might be the perfect fit. It’s one of the most practical options out there, with the added bonus of being easy on the eye.

What flooring is best for families?

We often recommend it to families with pets or young children because it’s waterproof, cushioned underfoot and incredibly easy to maintain. It doesn’t get upset by water bowls, muddy paw prints or the occasional spill, just a quick wipe and it’s as good as new. Karndean and Amtico both offer stunning designs that mimic real wood or stone but with a toughness that’s hard to beat.

We’ve also seen a resurgence in interest around laminate, especially from homeowners who want something quick to install, tough and cost effective. Today’s high quality laminates have come a long way and can stand up well to the rigours of a lived in home. Paired with the right underlay, it can even help reduce the click-clack of excited paws on hard floors.

Why Quality Underlay?

Underlay is one of those things you don’t see, but you’ll absolutely feel the benefit from, so it’s important to make the right decision.  Whether it’s noise reduction in upstairs rooms or extra comfort in a high traffic hallway, the right underlay makes a big difference to how your flooring performs over time. We always take care to match it properly, depending on the flooring type and what your household needs.
