One Floor Throughout Your Home?

Here's What we tell our clients...

It’s one of the questions we get asked most in our showroom.

“Should we have the same flooring running throughout the whole house?”

For some homes, the answer is yes. For others, maybe not.

There’s been a growing trend towards using one flooring throughout downstairs, or even across an entire property. It creates a clean, seamless look and can make a home feel larger, but before you commit, it’s worth thinking beyond the aesthetics.

Like most flooring decisions, the best choice depends on how you live, not what’s currently trending on Instagram.

There’s no denying that using the same flooring across several rooms creates a beautiful sense of flow.

Without thresholds or frequent changes in material, your eye naturally travels through the space, making rooms feel more connected. This works particularly well in modern, open-plan homes where the kitchen, dining room and living space all blend into one another.

It’s also a popular choice in smaller homes around Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, where a continuous floor can make the downstairs feel much more spacious than it actually is.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) from brands, such as Amtico and Karndean, is particularly suited to this approach because it can be installed throughout multiple rooms while maintaining a consistent finish.

The biggest mistake we see

People often fall in love with a flooring sample without imagining what it will be like in every room.  A beautiful timber-effect floor may look perfect in the lounge but feel cold in a bedroom.

Likewise, a soft carpet that’s wonderful upstairs wouldn’t survive the demands of a busy kitchen entrance.  The aim isn’t to make every room different but to make every room work.

You don't have to choose between flow and practicality

One of the biggest misconceptions is that changing flooring between rooms means losing continuity, it doesn’t.

Many homeowners choose an oak-effect LVT throughout their kitchen, hallway and dining room before moving to a complementary wool carpet in the lounge and bedrooms.

Maybe because the colours work together, the house still feels cohesive and the materials suit the purpose of each room better.  It’s often these subtle changes that make a home feel more considered.

Seeing it in a showroom makes all the difference

It is difficult to make a decision from looking at one small sample or online photograph.  A flooring sample can never show you how a product feels across an entire room, or how it works alongside different carpets, stair runners or adjoining spaces.

That’s why so many customers visit our showroom in Dry Drayton, just outside Cambridge, where large flooring displays allow you to compare products properly and see how different materials work together.  You are also welcome to take home samples on the same day, subject to availability.

Often, customers arrive convinced they want one floor throughout the house and leave with a completely different plan, one that’s better suited to their home and how they actually live.

So... should you use the same flooring throughout your home?

There’s no universal answer.

If you’re creating a modern open-plan space, one continuous floor can look fantastic.

If different rooms have very different jobs to do, mixing flooring types may give you a home that’s more practical, more comfortable and ultimately easier to live with.

The best flooring isn’t about following trends. It’s about choosing materials that work for your home, your family and your lifestyle.

If you’re planning new flooring in Cambridge, Dry Drayton or anywhere across Cambridgeshire, visit our showroom and explore the options in person. Our expert team will help you compare materials, colours and layouts, so you can make a decision you’ll still be happy with years down the line.
